Three months ago, in June 2025, Minnesota State Representative Melissa
Hortman and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot in their Brooklyn
Park home. The murders were part of a series of politically motivated
attacks that also targeted other state lawmakers.

The victims: Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman.
The suspect: Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was arrested and charged with
the murders.
The motive: The shooting is considered a politically motivated attack.
A list of other potential targets was found in the suspect's abandoned
car, including names of Democrats and people tied to the abortion
rights movement.
Method of attack: The suspect allegedly impersonated a police officer
to gain entry into the Hortmans' home.
Wider context: The same suspect is also accused of shooting and
wounding state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, on the same
morning.

Other recent incidents:

November 2024: A murder-suicide in Duluth resulted in the deaths of a
father, his wife, his ex-partner, and his two children.
August 2025: A shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic church resulted in
the deaths of two children and injuries to 21 others. The suspect, a
former student, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot
wound.
